Trying to keep up!

5th December 2017

Firstly, thank you so much everyone for your amazing support on my last blog post. It's so lovely that people can follow my journey without me having to tell everyone over and over where I'm up to! Just a week to go now until my transplant assessment but here's just a little update on life :)

I'm struggling this week to get uni work done! My brain just isn't working properly, I keep forgetting when I'm in the middle of doing things, and I can't focus on anything. I've also been rejected for PIP for the second time so I need to appeal that, which is an exhausting process! I feel like I need a secretary to do things for me! I really don't want to drop out of uni, mainly because I wouldn't receive my student loan anymore which is obviously my main income as I can't work, but also because I really wouldn't want to have to go back to do one year once I'm feeling better. So I'm just plodding along and if I don't get the grade I want I think I'll just be relieved to graduate!

But tomorrow is a new day and hopefully I'll be feeling better, today I've been feeling sorry for myself. I'm fed up of not being able to do things around the house and spending a whole day doing nothing, it makes me feel very useless and it's so frustrating. I think that's the reason why I'm so excited for what is a really scary operation! Haha. I haven't been feeling great heart wise this week either, I've been really tired which is why I'm spending most of my time just sat around watching TV. I've also been feeling really nauseous after I eat recently, I really can't eat much now so I'm just snacking a lot, surprisingly still haven't lost a single pound!

I had to have an MRSA swab today at the GP ready for going onto the transplant ward next week, they just take a few swabs and then I have to take the report with me to Wythenshawe when I'm admitted. Usually you have the swabs done when you get there but obviously I'll be on a ward with transplant patients that will have no immune system so I can't wander in with MRSA! Then on Monday I need to call the transplant ward and find out if I need to stop taking my blood thinner because of some of the tests I'm having done, and I also need to check on Tuesday that they have a bed ready for me according to the letter I was sent (which seems strange to me by hey ho!).

Not very related to the medical side of things but I dyed my eyebrows this week so that I don't have to wear makeup while I'm in the hospital and they look so much better! I also bought a cabin sized suitcase in the Matalan sale, it was 50% off! I've wanted one for ages and when I saw it I couldn't resist, so that's what I'll be taking in to the hospital with me :)

  1. Hi Charlotte
It strikes me that far from 'spending a whole day doing nothing' you've actually done exactly what you needed to - you listened to your body, always a good start and then you've also shared your story with all of us who are reading it, another big achievement. And yes you're right, tomorrow is always another day. Keep on writing!

6 Month Checkup at Liverpool

November 17th 2017 Today I was at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital for my 6 month follow up. I had an ECG, an Echocardiogram, and then I went to see Dr Todd. My ECG today shows that my ventricles are starting to struggle more and can't get as much oxygen around. A CT scan that I had done while I was admitted in August shows that I have enlarged lymph nodes in my chest. I've done a bit of googling and there are a few things that can cause enlarged lymph nodes in the chest including sarcoidosis and an infection. The doctors had a discussion and they think I should have them biopsied to check they're nothing scary. They're pretty confident that they're only swollen because of my heart but they have to tell the transplant team about it in case they want to investigate.  I had my DNA tested a while ago (it takes about 4 months to come back) so today I saw the genetics lady at Liverpool, Dr Mckay. She said they've found a faulty gene in me, so my mum and dad ne...

Surgeon Visit!

Hello again! Monday 18th I was back at Wythenshawe transplant outpatients to meet my surgeon Mr Venkat, there are 5 transplant surgeons so it may not be him that does my actual surgery but he is one of them and he met with me to explain further about the transplant surgery. I asked if I could record the meeting and he said that was fine, and it's a good job because he told us a lot of stuff that I can't remember already! So, first I had my bloods done, they redo one of the blood typing ones to double check that it's right and just some normal bloods like the heart failure measure BNP. So, Mr Venkat began by asking me about my daily life, things that I now struggle doing like making the bed, I don't go out of my house much and I get a tight chest when I'm not even exercising. Then he went through my three main tests. So, he firstly showed me my echocardiogram which shows that my atrium are huge! The ventricles are the muscular pumping chambers of the heart ...

Still not listed!

Friday 5th Jan 2017 I spoke to Ruth on the phone this afternoon to find out if I'm being listed and I have to wait until I've switched to Warfarin! So currently I take Apixaban (anticoagulant) because I had a blood clot in my heart, and I still take it to prevent getting another one and possibly having a stroke. Apixiban is a newer version of anticoagulant so it's a fixed dose whereas Warfarin you have to have the INR in your blood monitored and they adjust your dose and it can also be affected by certain foods. Warfarin works by blocking Vitamin K which is what clots your blood, so if you ever had an emergency operation they would give you Vitamin K to reverse the effect of Warfarin. However, there is no reversing agent for Apixaban so because I know I'll be having an operation at some point they will put be on Warfarin to ensure there's a reverse agent. This is annoying because I already knew I needed to switch to Warfarin and I could have done it weeks ago h...
