Appearing on This Morning!

Hello internet friends!

My goodness I'm behind with blogs, it's been a pretty crazy few weeks but people that have me on social media will know why! So early Thursday evening  22.02.18 I was sat watching TV around 4:30pm and a lady that I am in contact with at Press Association called and said that organ donation is being discussed in parliment on the Friday (the next day) and This Morning would love to interview me.

I said yes without even thinking and thought God I'd better go and have a wash because I'd been having a PJama day! Haha. Within half an hour I'd had a phone call with Karen from the show and my train tickets, hotel and car details sent to me. Anyone that knows me knows that I'm a stressor but I also can't really do amything fast either because of my condition! So I called my mum to come and help pack and by 8pm we were on the train heading for London! What does one pack to appear on TV?? When you can't wear black or patterns... Also, during this time I'd gone through my whole story with another lady on the phone which took ages! Ciaran practically got home from work and we left, bless him!

It was very exciting and I had so many people to call on the way there and tell them and spread the news that I'd be on the show the following morning! We got picked up from London Euston around 10 and taken to our hotel right in BlackFriars. Also, even though I was shattered I needed to fake tan before bed because I was SO pale.

Didn't really sleep much that night tossing and turning, I'm not a good sleeper at the best of times! Then bright and early around 6:15 Friday morning I was up, hair washed, base makeup on and a car picked us up to take us to the studios at 8:15. We went in the side entrance where all the guests go and were brought a tray of pastries and fruit and hot drinks in the green room and we sat and watched Jeremy Kyle for a bit!

By 9am I was having my eye makeup and hair done next to their beautiful agony aunt, and everyone was so lovely. Despite the crazy rush for us, no one at the show was stressed, they were all chilled getting ready. And walking back from makeup I saw Katie Piper in her side room and when I got back to the green room there were a couple of older ladies that had won a tour and they'd been to Loose women and today they were watching This Morning, so I'm not sure where they headed after that!

Eamonn came and sat in the green room and introduced himself which I thought was really sweet and obviously him and Ciaran were talking about the football! As well as another Kiearan who was in there but I didn't know.

Then at 10:40am I was on the TV! Hah. So in the morning I'd quickly been told 'just tell your story Charlotte and your thoughts on the vote in parliament etc.' So I was sat on the sofa ready for when the opening credits came on which was cool and Ruth and Eamonn had a chat about the news etc. And during the title sequence (where Holly picks up a magazine with my face on!) they both moved over to the sofa to discuss why I was on the show.

I can honestly say that I wasn't nervous! I forgot everything I wanted to say obviously, I didn't even say what my condition was so it just said 'Charlotte has a rare heart condition!) Haha oops. But it was just so much fun! And they just asked what I thought about the vote which for me is a no brainer! The vote was to see if our organ donation system should be changed to opt-out meaning that you will automatically be signed up unless you take your name off. I think from what I've seen that the public are massively in favour of this and it did pass on the Friday to the next round of detailing!

The new system would mean that the family can still stop donation if they felt it isn't what you would have wanted but it would capture the people that are for donation and just haven't bothered to sign the register. The most important part in it all is telling your families what you'd want! No one at 20 thinks they're going to die, even at 50 but it's so important as donation can massively improve and extend someones life like mine instead of them being wasted in thr ground. It would also be a huge decision for your family to make at the time, where as if they already know what you'd want to happen it can make that time a little easier.

I also asked if it would be okay to take a picture with the gorgeous Katie Piper, and she was so interested in the debate. She's had a cornea transplant and she actually doesn't need antirejection drugs now because she had stem cells taken from her good eye, which I thought was really cool!

Anyway, thought the day was over and we were going to grab some lunch and meet a friend and had back home but I had another phone call from ITV Grananda asking if they could come to the house around 3pm to interview me! So off we popped back to little ol' Winnington! The film crewe came to the house and interviewed me and I was on the news at 6!

Now, I fell asleep on the train but for about half an hour so I'd been running since 6:15am! So we actually missed the news because we had the wrong bloody channel on! But by 6:30 I was out for the count!

I was blown away with how professional and kind everyone was on This Morning and it made me calm that everyone else was! I'd love to do it again, it was such a great day!

5 years of being a heart transplant recipient

I wrote this post 3 years ago and it just sat here as my blog wasn't live, but I wrote it to process my feelings around hitting such a huge milestone, it's obviously now out of date but I decided to just post it as is! The blog is back. It might be a one off, I might stay consistent, who knows. As I often say 'life has a plan but we'll never know what it is'. I'm not quite 5 years post transplant, my anniversary is 27th Feb 2023 but the countdown to this anniversary has been going on for months now. Every year feels like a big deal but this anniversary feels like a huge deal and I'm not fully sure why. A lot has happened since I was 21 and put on that transplant waiting list, in fact, looking back is like watching a film about a girl I kind of know but not very well. I have a scar down the centre of my chest to remind me of what I've been through, but even that has faded to a point where I don't even notice it.  So my emotions have been quite mixed r...

Still not listed!

Friday 5th Jan 2017 I spoke to Ruth on the phone this afternoon to find out if I'm being listed and I have to wait until I've switched to Warfarin! So currently I take Apixaban (anticoagulant) because I had a blood clot in my heart, and I still take it to prevent getting another one and possibly having a stroke. Apixiban is a newer version of anticoagulant so it's a fixed dose whereas Warfarin you have to have the INR in your blood monitored and they adjust your dose and it can also be affected by certain foods. Warfarin works by blocking Vitamin K which is what clots your blood, so if you ever had an emergency operation they would give you Vitamin K to reverse the effect of Warfarin. However, there is no reversing agent for Apixaban so because I know I'll be having an operation at some point they will put be on Warfarin to ensure there's a reverse agent. This is annoying because I already knew I needed to switch to Warfarin and I could have done it weeks ago h...

6 Month Checkup at Liverpool

November 17th 2017 Today I was at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital for my 6 month follow up. I had an ECG, an Echocardiogram, and then I went to see Dr Todd. My ECG today shows that my ventricles are starting to struggle more and can't get as much oxygen around. A CT scan that I had done while I was admitted in August shows that I have enlarged lymph nodes in my chest. I've done a bit of googling and there are a few things that can cause enlarged lymph nodes in the chest including sarcoidosis and an infection. The doctors had a discussion and they think I should have them biopsied to check they're nothing scary. They're pretty confident that they're only swollen because of my heart but they have to tell the transplant team about it in case they want to investigate.  I had my DNA tested a while ago (it takes about 4 months to come back) so today I saw the genetics lady at Liverpool, Dr Mckay. She said they've found a faulty gene in me, so my mum and dad ne...
