Another trip to Liverpool

10/01/18

Hello all!

Fancied a little trip to see my friends at Liverpool Heart and Chest today. Three weeks ago I had a cold and my chest was much worse and I was struggling to breath but I just thought it was because I'd been ill so I left it for a while. But it still hasn't cleared and this week I've been really struggling to breath at night, I've had to sit up in bed to sleep because I can't breath. The best way I can explain it is that it feels as if someone is lay on top of me and sometimes I wake up in the night because I feel like I'm being suffocated. I've also had a crackly chest which I've not really had since I started taking my water tablet, although I sometimes get it if I eat too much salt.

So I sent an email yesterday and Dr Todd said he wanted me to come in to the day ward. I arrived about 1pm and sat around until 3 (I had a nap obviously) and then I got my mum to ask what was going on because no one had spoken to me in that time. They made a phone call and said a doctor was coming to see me because Dr Todd is in surgery today. A doctor came within a few minutes and he checked me over, checked my weight and ankles for swelling and asked what's been wrong. He said based on my symptoms they're going to admit me regardless of my test results.

The tests I had were bloods, a chest Xray and an ECG. He said that it does look a bit more congested than usual but not massively. But they're going to give me furesomide as an injection and see if that helps. I was admitted to the ward straight after my X-Ray, that was nice and quick, so I was in a bed for about 5pm.

I didn't take my evening 40mg of furesomide, they gave it me as a drip over half an hour. Usually my evening dose doesn't do anything, this one surely works! It took about 5 minutes to kick in and I've been for a wee 5 times in the last hour (not an easy task when you've got to carry a heart rate monitor with you!) So hopefully I'll be feeling better tonight, I feel better already actually, I'm not crackly now and I can breath easier. Tomorrow Doctor Todd will come and see me and we'll see what he says, hopefully I can go home! The nurse said I'll hopefully get a side room tomorrow if I have to stay, because this ward is mainly full of the older generation. Which I don't mind, I like to chat to them but lights are out at 10pm and back on at 7am which is not my time schedule! Haha. I'm exhausted because I've not been able to sleep properly the last few days and I haven't been able to nap properly today so I'm hoping for a good sleep tonight now my lungs feel clearer! I have my ear plugs and my eye mask packed ready, they'll struggle to wake me in the morning!

Just having a debate with Ciaran about which hospital we prefer! I can't decide really, I like the food better at Liverpool for sure, but I really like the nurses at both. It's weird because I'm in the same bed that I was in when I was admitted in August and it's the end bed like at Wythenshawe, so I'm having De Ja Vu!

Enjoy your evening everyone, I'll check in again when I have more info!

  1. Sorry today has been another challenge for you Charlotte. You always sound very positive but I'm sure there are plenty of times when you want to scream... now that WOULD wake the older generation up on the ward! Hope you get some rest tonight. Thinking of you and great to read your updates.

6 Month Checkup at Liverpool

November 17th 2017 Today I was at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital for my 6 month follow up. I had an ECG, an Echocardiogram, and then I went to see Dr Todd. My ECG today shows that my ventricles are starting to struggle more and can't get as much oxygen around. A CT scan that I had done while I was admitted in August shows that I have enlarged lymph nodes in my chest. I've done a bit of googling and there are a few things that can cause enlarged lymph nodes in the chest including sarcoidosis and an infection. The doctors had a discussion and they think I should have them biopsied to check they're nothing scary. They're pretty confident that they're only swollen because of my heart but they have to tell the transplant team about it in case they want to investigate.  I had my DNA tested a while ago (it takes about 4 months to come back) so today I saw the genetics lady at Liverpool, Dr Mckay. She said they've found a faulty gene in me, so my mum and dad ne...

Surgeon Visit!

Hello again! Monday 18th I was back at Wythenshawe transplant outpatients to meet my surgeon Mr Venkat, there are 5 transplant surgeons so it may not be him that does my actual surgery but he is one of them and he met with me to explain further about the transplant surgery. I asked if I could record the meeting and he said that was fine, and it's a good job because he told us a lot of stuff that I can't remember already! So, first I had my bloods done, they redo one of the blood typing ones to double check that it's right and just some normal bloods like the heart failure measure BNP. So, Mr Venkat began by asking me about my daily life, things that I now struggle doing like making the bed, I don't go out of my house much and I get a tight chest when I'm not even exercising. Then he went through my three main tests. So, he firstly showed me my echocardiogram which shows that my atrium are huge! The ventricles are the muscular pumping chambers of the heart ...

Still not listed!

Friday 5th Jan 2017 I spoke to Ruth on the phone this afternoon to find out if I'm being listed and I have to wait until I've switched to Warfarin! So currently I take Apixaban (anticoagulant) because I had a blood clot in my heart, and I still take it to prevent getting another one and possibly having a stroke. Apixiban is a newer version of anticoagulant so it's a fixed dose whereas Warfarin you have to have the INR in your blood monitored and they adjust your dose and it can also be affected by certain foods. Warfarin works by blocking Vitamin K which is what clots your blood, so if you ever had an emergency operation they would give you Vitamin K to reverse the effect of Warfarin. However, there is no reversing agent for Apixaban so because I know I'll be having an operation at some point they will put be on Warfarin to ensure there's a reverse agent. This is annoying because I already knew I needed to switch to Warfarin and I could have done it weeks ago h...
